Democratic Dropouts: Webb, Chaffee announce end to presidential campaigns

On Oct. 20 2015, exactly a week after the first Democratic presidential debate, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb announced he would no longer be seeking the Democratic nomination for president. After numerous comments on Webb being a “closet Republican” many were wondering how much longer he would be running as a Democrat. “I fully accept that my views on many issues are not compatible with the power structure and the nominating base of the Democratic Party,” said Webb during his announcement about dropping out of the race.

Three days later, former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee also decided to drop out of the race. This was not entirely surprising, as Chafee was losing traction in the polls. He had made obvious efforts to point out that he had voted against the Iraq war and made a final plea for peace during his address about dropping out of the presidential race. One of his more obscure positions was how he wanted the United States to switch to the metric system. These unusual tactics resulted in his ultimate leaving from the race.
