The Sentiment of Senior Night

The+Sentiment+of+Senior+Night

Senior Night is an exciting and sentimental night for senior athletes and their families as they say their final goodbyes to their beloved high school sports careers. For athletes, this night goes far beyond just walking up the track and receiving a handshake. Many athletes have grown up with their teammates and have become close friends over the years after conquering the highs and lows of varsity athletics together.

For senior athletes like Will Swirski, who has been playing golf at Oakton for the past two years, it is a goodbye to a great season with his golf family. During the 2015 season, Oakton Golf achieved runner-up in the District and Regional Championships, went to the State Championship, and even won the first tournament for Oakton in nine years. Throughout his time at Oakton, Swirski has grown quite close to his teammates. “The boys are like my best friends,” says Swirski, “playing golf with them, it’s more than just golf, they’re my brothers.” Although he plans to continue playing golf in the future, it won’t be the same without his best friends by his side.

For other seniors like Patrick Davis, Senior Night is a nice way to honor the athletes who have played for Oakton for so many years, although to him it is less meaningful for the players than it is for their families and friends. The athletes on the football team who also play a game on Senior Night try to treat it like just another game, although it is a fun event. “I think it’s fun to recognize all the seniors and all the work they’ve put in,” says Davis. Although Senior Night is not greatly sentimental to Davis, knowing that his career as an Oakton Cougar is about to end is a sad feeling. He too has grown very close with his teammates and will miss Friday night football. Davis has enjoyed his time at Oakton and has made the best of it. “I’ve loved every minute of it,” says Davis.
