The red cup controversy

The red cup controversy

There are a lot of ways to tell that the holiday season is coming soon, one of them being the always-popular Starbucks holiday cups. In past years, the seasonal cups were adorned with festive snowmen and ornaments, but this year the cups came out plain, red, and underwhelming to customers. However, these red cups are a little more than underwhelming to some. In fact, some people have gone as far to say the cups are downright offensive.

The controversy started with a Facebook post from evangelical Christian Josh Feuerstein stating that “Starbucks wanted to take Christ and Christmas off of their brand new cups.” While some people argued against his views, some agreed with the former pastor, feeding into the idea of Starbucks’s “war on Christmas.” The topic soon garnered national attention along with comments from public figures such as Ellen Degeneres, who made a humorous response to the situation on her show, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who suggested that his supporters boycott the company.  Starbucks responded to the controversy in a statement.  “Belonging, inclusion and diversity are the core value of Starbucks and Starbucks wants to give customers an experience that inspires the spirit of the season,” said Starbucks.
