Oakton gets academic

It’s Academic, an academic quiz competition for high schoolers, started airing in 1961 on NBC4 in Washington, D.C. This is the shows 55th school year of being on T.V, which is why the show received a world record from The Guinness Book of World Records for being the world’s longest-running TV quiz show. Each registered school from Washington D.C., Baltimore, Central Virginia, and Hawaii, competes in the single elimination rounds by region. The winner of region gets the opportunity to compete against the other winning schools in the other regions.

On October 17th, 2015, students from Oakton High School got the opportunity to represent their fellow students by being a part of It’s Academic. This episode aired on Nov. 28, 2015, on NBC4. Anika Malik (11) is a part of the scholastic bowl team at Oakton, which is how she got the opportunity to be on this show. Although they lost, Malik felt it had to do with speed. “[The questions on It’s Academic were] pretty easy, but it was a matter of who buzzed in first to answer,” said Malik. The kinds of questions asked in this show range from history and science to mythology and sports, and many other topics.

The club at Oakton prepares for this show by going over strategies to answer the questions they may be asked on game day, but for content, individual members have to study that themselves. Students use this as a way to increase their knowledge, and in the process, make friends as well.
