Humane Frog Dissection

Educational dissection, such as frog dissection has been a battle for an animal activist for a while, but now, with the help of SynDenver a synthetic dissection compony, new technology has allowed dissection to be more humane than ever before. frog dissection has been a biology tradition since 1900. It was initially only for college-level courses, then it became a routine activity in high schools. Six million animals are killed each year for the dissection industry, causing animal rights activists to feel the need to find a solution to educational dissection. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) contributed to the release of the SynDaver synthetic frog earlier this year with each frog priced at around $150 each. This has been a big step for animal rights activists. However, some still debate that students deserve an authentic experience.

A Florida high school was the first to do a school-wide synthetic frog dissection in the world. They partnered up with SynDenver for the dissection. SynDenver produces “sophisticated and synthetic humans and animals for surgical training, anatomy education and medical device testing.” The company claims that its products are not only more animal-friendly but less toxic because it does not contain formaldehyde

Timothy Hailu (9) said he thinks that students should still deserve the experience, but only if the dissection companies are farming more frogs than their using. From an ethical standpoint, Hailu said he thinks that it depends on how necessary the dissection is for it to be okay. Audrey Adonteng (9) said that synthetic frogs should replace once-living frogs for dissection due to the lack of necessity for killing millions of frogs if there is an alternative.
