Prom is the event for high schoolers to just take a break from school and break loose from everything. Having fun with friends, especially with dates can be awesome and a good time. Although when it comes to prom, it is a lot of work. Especially with getting ready. People want to get out there and not only to impress their dates, but to have fun while getting ready. Getting ready as in finding the right dress or tux, shoes, styling the hair, getting a corsage for their date, and more! There is another way to get ready for prom and that is prom planning. Prom planning is a lot of work, and it is not easy. There are a lot of decisions to make and a lot of choices to choose from. But what is it going to be like for Oakton High?

As everyone knows, last year was a hectic year for everyone and everyone was adjusting to the new normal. Wearing masks everywhere we go, virtual learning, students going inside school after a year and wearing masks, plus not seeing friends that we haven’t seen in a long time. Plus, prom was very different for everyone, especially when it came to planning it. They had to add the distance rules and made sure everyone was safe and healthy. According to Mr. McCulla, one of the staff members of Oakton High, is working with the leadership officers and senior officers in school. Prom planning this year is a little different. So much to worry about and focus on especially with the prom theme. Many decisions and visualization according to Mr. McCulla, “we have not decided the prom theme, although we have narrowed it down to five possible themes. We’re going to put a vision board of each theme out to the senior class through Schoology next week and we’re gonna let them vote and we worked with the leadership officers and we worked with the senior class officers.”

Stress is also another main problem when it comes to planning these things. If there is something that seems wrong or out of order, they might have to redo it and that just messes things up and Mr. McCulla can agree with this, “it gets crazy. Not only are we working with the venue to figure out what spaces we have or if we have space, we’re also working with the food vendors because we don’t provide dinner, we provide tons of dessert options.”  It’s pretty clear that prom is a lot of work and it takes a lot of time. But at least this year, seniors can have fun and have the opportunity to have the greatest night of their lives.
