Tricks

Halloween is filled with an abundance of scary pranks, frightening costumes, and spooky houses. Although the majority of people enjoy the treats more than the tricks, fear is still a thrilling part of Halloween. The scariest houses on Halloween night, and the most fearful haunted corn mazes ,always gain the most attention during the fall time. During the many years of trick or treating as a child, people tend to mostly remember the times they got the most scared. While trick or treating, Erin Lincoln (10) remembers one house that was particularly horrifying. When she walked into a garage, filled with smoke, she was greeted by a man holding a bowl of candy. The man shocked her, so she quickly grabbed the candy from the bowl and stormed away from the house.

Grace Beeman (10) remembers one of her friend’s houses being particularly intimidating on Halloween. She remembers seeing random people with chain saws running on the lawn in front of the house. There were also people inside coffins that jumped out and caused people to scream. For Beeman, this was the best house to be at for both trick and treats on Halloween night.
Not only are the houses scary, but also the costumes are as well. Anna Klinker (10) once saw a cigarette costume for babies. How freaked out would you be if you saw a baby dressed up as a cigarette come up to your door saying “trick or treat?” Shreya Dalal (10) once saw a someone dressed up as Walter White, from the television series Breaking Bad. If creative enough, costumes can be another creepy aspect of Halloween.

Whether you enjoy being frightened, or not, Halloween wouldn’t be the same without all the shocking tricks.

Treats

As a child, Halloween was mainly about the treats. Candy has always been the reason children can not wait to walk around their neighborhoods for hours on October 31 every year. While you walk up to each new house, you are always hoping that you will get a king size chocolate bar or the biggest bag of Sour Patch Kids. However, sometimes what you are given does not meet your expectations. Maybe it is because you were only given a fun sized Hershey’s bar; maybe it was because you were given something healthy on a night when you are trying to collect as many sweets as you possibly can. Either way, sometimes we walk away from a house with something we did not want.

Some Oakton students’ least favorite candies to get are black licorice, mints, raisins, gum, and hard fruit candies. Lauren Silas’ (10) least favorite treat to be given while trick or treating is a small bag of pretzels, because she thinks they are always such a let down. While trick or treating once, Emily Kassab (10) was given carrots. There is nothing worse than vegetables, when you are expecting only the sweetest of foods. Some Oakton students have been giving treats that were not even edible. Some objects students have been given while trick-or-treating are tooth brushes, pencils, and even glue on vampire teeth.

However, not all houses give out terrible treats on Halloween night. Some students’ favorite treats are Reese’s, chocolate bars, York Peppermint Patties, Kit Kats, and gummy bears. There will always be the one house on the street giving out the king size candy bars. Those are always everybody’s favorite house to knock on, because they always go beyond trick or treaters’ expectations.

Candy will always be the best treat to enjoy on Halloween, after a night filled with scary houses and spooky costumes. Treats are a great thing to enjoy on Halloween, after a night filled with scary houses and creepy costumes. Whether you prefer chocolate or fruity candy, make sure to enjoy something sweet this Halloween.

May Your Halloween Night be spooktacular!
