A March For Science

On April 22nd, 2016, protesters angry with the administration of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence gathered in over 600 cities around the globe to protest the administration’s policies, particularly as it relates to their denial of climate change and rollback of Environmental Protection Agency regulations. Protesters carried signs and listened to several scientists speak, including the famous Bill Nye “The Science Guy”. Thousands of protesters gathered at the White House and marched toward the Capitol. I had the pleasure of interviewing one at the march. The transcript is below.

Myself: What’s your name?

Manning: Kelly Manning.

Myself: Ok, where are you from?

Manning: Atlanta, Georgia.

Myself: So you flew all the way up here?

Manning: Yeah, I did!

Myself: Isn’t there a scientist march going on in Atlanta right now?

Manning: There is actually.

Myself: But you still chose to come to DC, why’d you come to DC?

Manning: Because most science organizations are founded here and this is where politics are made, legislation is made and what we want is evidence based legislation.

Myself: Who did you vote for in the election?

Manning: Obviously… I think you know who.

Myself: What drew you to the scientist march in particular?

Manning: I’m a biomedical researcher and I’m also getting my masters in public health, so I am drawn to science both in my professional capacity as a day to day researcher and as a student of public health… I work and study full time at Emory University.

Myself: Ok, alright, thank you very much!
