Cyber-bullying and its impacts~

A quite well-known and famous celebrity in the Kpop industry by the name of Sulli, unfortunately passed away recently. About a week ago, the singer was sadly found dead by her manager at her home in Seongnam, South Korea. Since she lives alone, she was only found a few hours after the incident. She was only 25.

She was quite well-known for being outspoken and being controversial in Korea as well. The singer was not given the help and treatment she needed for her depression and frequent panic-attacks, and unfortunately, the hate comments didn’t stop either. Many fans speculate that she committed suicide over the exteame amount of online-bullying and unecassery hate she got from netizens.

Many incidents similar to these have happened in the past. This story proves that nothing is being done to prevent these harsh treatment of millions of people, many of which are students in school. Cyberbullying is a serious problem, and its consequences should be taken more seriously. It seems ridiculous that even in our day and age, issues like these are still happening. Its effects on mental health are undeniable, and in many more conservitive countries, mental health is almost like a ‘taboo’ in society. If the person seeks help, he/she is treated like they are crazy or something is wrong with them. People don’t seem to realize the immense effects it can have on a person, and just to remind a few, celebrities are people too.

If you or a friend is ever a victim of cyberbullying, remember to stay away from any negativity in your life. It may seem difficult to do so, but remember blocking and reporting the person doing harm is always an option. And if it still somehow doesn’t stop, remember to tell someone. As cliche as it sounds, that itself is one of the bravest things a person can do.

Remember, that the person behind the screen has feelings too. Just because you can’t see them, doesn’t make them any less human. Even an insult that may seem small or insignificant to you can leave a lasting impact on the person behind the screen/ victim.
