Enola Holmes is a movie that was recently put out on Netflix. It stars Millie Bobbie Brown, Helena Bonham Carter, Henry Cavill, and many other well know actors. The movie follows the main character, Enola, through her adventures in finding her mom who mysteriously left on Enola’s 16th birthday. 

Enola Holmes is the sister of the infamous Sherlock Holmes, who she inevitably challenges in detective skills. Her name is very unique, however, spelled backward is Alone, and one of the main themes of the movie. The characters, especially Enola and her mom play around with words and letters using them as secret code. 

Enola Holmes has many moments where the viewers are sitting on the edge of their seats. The movie balances violence, love, and friendship in a way that pulls the watchers in and creates an all-around engaging film.

Emma Linorf (12) said in an interview “I liked the beginning when she was introducing herself because it was done in a really unique and intriguing way.” In the beginning of the movie, Enola introduces herself while talking to the camera and riding a bike. This moment builds curiosity in the viewer and also excitement. 

The movie is face-paced with the main character, at certain moments of the story, talking to the viewers. This created a connection between the two parties as well as helped to know Enola’s feelings and thoughts. 

In an interview with Oakton student Emma Lindorf (12), she enjoyed “The fact that they broke the fourth wall [and it] made the movie much more engaging and added humor at times.” Ultimately the director’s choice to do this made the viewer understand the movie better and balance the seriousness of the adventures.

The movie held, however, a greater meaning than just for entertainment. It showed many women, and more so a girl, who was brave, assertive, and challenged the ideals of the time. Enola could be viewed as a role model for many girls around the world. 

A quote from the movie states, “Our future is up to us.” This was said by Enola’s mom and was a large inspiration for Enola throughout the movie. However, the viewers can also find motivation from this quote. 

Overall, Enola Holmes is a great movie for a family movie night where you can enjoy a bowl of popcorn and snuggle on the couch. Although, be prepared to throw the popcorn in the air for the many plot twists and finish the movie with a satisfying feeling and inspiration to solve your own mysteries in life.
