The Craziest NFL Free Agency Ever
So many big stars are on the move, how will this shake-up next season?
What are free Agents:
Free agency is what makes the offseason so special in the first place. Big names are always on the move and it can shake up the next season and seasons to come. There are two types of free agents: unrestricted free agents and undrafted free agents. Unrestricted free agents are players with expired contracts that have completed four or more accrued seasons of service. They are free to sign with any franchise. Undrafted free agents are players eligible for the NFL Draft but were not selected; they can negotiate and sign with any team.
Who’s on the move:
There are many stars that are free agents this offseason. This includes Dak Prescott QB, Trent Williams OT, Allen Robinson WR, Brandon Scherff RG, JJ Watt DE, Kenny Golladay WR, Aaron Jones RB, Corey Linsley C, JuJu Smith-Schuster WR, Cam Newton QB, Curtis Samuel WR, and Will Fuller WR. Obviously, some big names are on the move. Where they sign will affect seasons to come. Chantilly freshman, Jared Dallos, said, “This is one of the most stacked free agency classes we have ever seen.”
How will this affect next season:
Over the next couple of weeks, all of these players will have signed with a team and may determine who makes the playoffs and who doesn’t. Some teams are just a couple of pieces away from being championship contenders and free agency is a place where they can fill that position. For example, the Washington Football Team has a great defense but just needs a couple more positions on offense, and if they get it, they could be dangerous. Another reason this will affect next year is the ability to create superteams. Right now there are no unbeatable teams but with a new season, the ability to create superteams is back. Free Agency also allows veterans to “ring chase”. Ring chasing is when a player is near the end of their career so they go to a championship contender and hope to get a ring before they retire. Football fan Jared Dallos stated, “I think this free agency has the ability to catapult many teams in the championship mix.” Without a doubt, this free agency has the ability to decide who will go to Disney World.
