Golden Globe for best joke on a president-elect goes to
How Donald Trump influenced the Golden Globes
January 10, 2017
At the 74th annual Golden Globes, there were many familiar faces along with a variety of new movies and shows. Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon, hosted this year’s event. It did not take long for him to mention the president-elect. With under two weeks until Donald Trump’s inauguration, he was a hot topic and an easy target. Fallon’s first joke came in the opening monologue, when he compared Trump to a notorious “Game of Thrones” character. Fallon continued to go on and mock the election process. “This is the Golden Globes: One of the few places left where America honors the popular vote,” said Fallon.
Fallon was not the only person to mention Trump throughout the night. The best supporting actor Golden Globe winner, Hugh Laurie, also made a few jokes about Trump during his acceptance speech. Laurie said that it was amazing that he won this award at the last ever Golden Globes. “I don’t mean to be gloomy, it’s just that it has the words Hollywood, foreign, and press in the title,” said Laurie. He even mentioned the republicans, saying that to some even the word association is sketchy.
Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award recipient, Meryl Streep, used her acceptance speech as a way to send a message. As an avid Hillary Clinton supporter, Streep’s speech quickly became political. She began by mentioning the diversity throughout Hollywood. She singled out several actors and actresses in the room, and identified where these individuals were born and raised. Streep went on to say that if all these people were kicked out, the nation would have nothing to watch besides football and mixed martial arts. She went on to call out Trump for mocking a disabled news reporting, which turned into a conversation about how the free press needs to be preserved. As per usual, Trump noticed this speech, and went to Twitter, claiming that Streep is one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood.
Hollywood’s stance on the election results are quite clear. As the president-elect becomes the president in office, the nation will see if these jokes actually turn into reality.
