It’s a brisk time of year and for some it begins the hiking season in the area. Many summer attractions have closed and the Fall season for climbing and adventuring the outdoors are in full swing. These are the top 3 hiking attractions in the surrounding Virginia area going from 3 being the third best down to 1, the top surrounding attraction

3 – Scott’s Run Nature Preserve

Very popular in the Fairfax County Area is Scott’s run nature preserve in McLean, Virginia. Scott’s Run is a free hike that sits on the inland of the Potomac River. It features a hike that goes alongside a waterfall and is great experience for friends and family. It is one of the few nature reserves in Fairfax County and has heavy competition in the surrounding area. However, what brings it over the top is the awesome forest hike. The hike stretches for miles and at the end is the river and pool which marks a successful end. During the Fall the leaves of the forest change their colors and create and awesome view. Overall Scott’s Run is an awesome place to visit and is only a couple of minutes away for many Oakton students!

2 – White Oak Canyon

In the beautiful depths of the Shenandoah Valley rests a very overlooked hike in the likes of White Oak Canyon. One hour away from Harrisonburg, Virginia and a good two from Oakton, the location is a perfect half day trip and is free to any group or individual that is looking for a great hike. Passes aren’t required and parking is available. As for the hike itself it is not a challenge at all and is rather a scenic hike than for sports. There is a stream that runs down the path of the hike and has a great water fall towards the end that holds a pool of water with a good drop. This is great for the summer time as the water is suitable, but for this time of year it is usually too cold and is instead just good for its view. All in all it’s a fantastic hiking spot for friends who want to enjoy a forest with great views and a memorable time.
