Premier League Mid-Season Review
The English Premier League is nearing the one-quarter mark of the season and the table is beginning to even out. The real contenders are being cut out from those who are falling at the wayside. This season has proven that those teams that took the summer transfer window seriously, are having success thus far. The early front runners are Manchester City as they have made it through the first 9 games unbeaten and are scoring with ease. City spent over 250 million in the summer strengthening their defense so that they would have more attacking freedom with less concern about conceding. They brought in incredible young and talented defenders Kyle Walker, Danilo, and Benjamin Mendy with the addition of a new goalkeeper Ederson Morales. Manager Pep Guardiola’s free-form attacking style has been able to shine brightly with the security of their defense. Lead by Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero, the goals are pouring in. The next closest contenders are Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs. Manchester United made a major move in the summer with the addition of Romelu Lukaku from Everton. At only 25, Lukaku was a proven striker in the league and has been on fire to kick off the season . With 7 goals in 9 game, Lukaku is looking to lead Manchester United’s title charge despite many injuries to top players including Paul Pogba. Tottenham got off to a slow start in their new stadium, but their star player Harry Kane got them back on track in September. After not scoring in the month of August, Kane is now the top scorer in the league with 8 goals in 9 games. Spurs are a young but experienced group and they have been in tight title races the last 2 seasons. This team is very consistent and with arguably the best player in the Premier League leading their lines, they will stick around until the very end. In fourth place are last year’s champion’s Chelsea. They made improvements to their squad by bringing in Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid. The striker got them off to a hot start but when he fell to an injury, Chelsea began to slip. With loses to last place Crystal Palace, Manchester City, and Burnley, they find themselves in fourth place with an uphill climb to challenge for the title. Arsenal are another team that have had a very up and down season so far and somehow still find themselves in the top 5. With star players Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil looking to leave the club in the January transfer window, Arsenal will have some tough decisions to make in the near future. The final team of the “big 6” is Liverpool. The reds have had the worst season so far and find himself in 9th place. Liverpool’s issues are the same issues that have plagued them for years and manager Jurgen Klopp has failed to address them. Their defense is shambolic and no matter how many goals they score, it is impossible for a team to succeed when your team is conceding every game. Klopp had the entire summer to address the defensive issues and sign new players and nothing was done. Klopp fins himself and his team in a difficult position with 2 months until the transfer window and plenty of tough games on the schedule. This is shaping up to be one of the premier league’s most exciting season and this season will hopefully stay close and competitive until the final day. With the top teams looking stronger than ever, drama seems indefinite and the winter transfer window will only add more to it.
