Samsung vs. Apple- Who will win?

The Samsung Galaxy s8 took home the award of the best smartphone released in 2017 during the world smartphone conference. The Galaxy s8 Plus and Galaxy Note 8 were in line too alongside the Iphone 8 and 8 plus and the Iphone X.

After Samsung’s infamous Note 7 debacle, they had to come back strong. They did just that with the releases of the Samsung Galaxy s8 plus and the Galaxy s8. They bolstered their supremacy above all smartphone makers with the Note 8. Apple had to come back after that and they did a pretty good job with the Iphone 8 and 8 plus and the X.

The Samsung Galaxy s8 came packed with features. It was the first smartphone ever to have an all screen and almost no-bezel front with a beautiful glass back. It came with an AMOLED display and probably has one of the crispest cameras we’ve ever seen on a smartphone. It had a beautiful 5.8 inch all screen display with the Galaxy s8 coming with staggering 6.2 inch display. The battery life on these phones were just amazing too with around a 13 hour talk time. The Galaxy Note 8 came at a gigantic 6.3 inch display with again, almost no bezels supporting an all screen display. It featured the first dual camera lens on the back ever on an Android device, second only to the Iphone 7 plus last year. The camera was the best ever seen on a smartphone. Just as the S8 and S8 plus, this phone ran Android 7.0 Nougat. The one downpoint that both devices had was the awkward placing of the fingerprint sensor right next to the camera on the back of the phone. Samsung is looking to improve/correct this with the Galaxy s9 and the Galaxy Note 9.

Apple released the Iphone 8 and 8 plus in September, hoping to make a dent in Samsung’s success. The 8 failed to do much harm as it was the same design as the 7 and 7 plus —basically identical! However the 8 and 8 plus came with all glass backs too. The Iphone X on the other hand, was a beauty. It completely redesigned the Iphone with a beautiful all screen front, just like the Galaxy s8, s8 plus, and Note 8. It came with an OLED display with a 5.8 screen. In this phone, however, Apple got rid of the innovation it helped pioneer. The Fingerprint sensor. Apple completely extracted the fingerprint sensor in support of a supposedly more reliable and secure facial recognition system that allegedly has a 3D scanning system built in, so you cannot trick it with photos of someone like the Galaxy S8’s facial recognition. However, note that the S8 comes with iris scanning and fingerprint scanning too.

Overall, both companies scored a win this year with major updated and revolutionary phones. The Galaxy S8, S8 plus, Note 8, Iphone 8, 8 plus, and X were all something we’ve never seen before. Samsung pioneered the future with the all screen technology and apple innovated it. Although looking at statistics and real-life facts and observations, Samsung takes the obvious win in technology, Apple gets more popularity and hype with this generation’s youth. “Nobody likes Samsung, Apple for life”, said Freshman Andy Jeremy-Robertson, showcasing the common attitude of the youth towards Apple.
