Subway Bombing in New York City
Terrorist attacks have been common in the past few years. On Monday around 7:20 pm, another supposed terrorist attack took place in a subway. A terrorist attack orchestrated by, 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, took place at the underground subway in in New York City. Fortunately, not many people were hurt. The New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, thinks that this was an attempted terrorist attack. Other than the bombing, nothing else was planned or carried out.
New York City is a very common target for terrorist attacks as it is highly populated and as de Blasio stated, there are people of all walks of life and backgrounds and often they are common targets. The New York City Police Commissioner, James O’Neil stated that Ullah was wearing an explosive device that was strapped to his body. He detonated a pipe bomb that was on his body. When the device went off, Ullah was walking on the underground subway. Ullah was the only person to suffer from major injuries. He suffered from burns and wounds to his abdomen; he is now at Bellevue Hospital. However, there were three other people who complained of minor injuries – ringing in the ears and a headache. Officials are not sure if this supposed terrorist attack was orchestrated by a bigger group of people.
When investigators asked what his motive was and why he felt the need to orchestrate this attack, Ullah stated that he chose the subway because of the Christmas themed posters in the subway and he wanted to get back at the United States for their airstrikes against Syria. He told investigators that he was radicalized online and has made frequent international trips over the last five years.
Ullah made the bomb by following an online tutorial. The homemade device was made by packing match heads into a pipe and was detonated with a broken Christmas tree light powered by a nine volt battery.
There was a slight disruption in commute that day but everything has resumed to normal. In the future, hopefully New York can take preventive measures to avoid these terrorist attacks and prevent its people.
