Spotify Streaming Numbers: New Trends In 2017

As the year drew to a close, Spotify began implementing its annual end-of-the-year features. Christmas playlists and playlists to commemorate the best music of the past year began appearing on the front page, artists appeared in advertisements to boost last-minute sales, and many other things happened. However, two things stood out among the variety of features Spotify implemented.

The first one was 2017wrapped.com, a website that shows users the music they listened to the most in 2017. It provides a comprehensive summary of your listening habits, the speed of music you listen to, your most-listened artists, and your most-listened genres. Additionally, it shows how many minutes of music you listened to and how many times you skipped a song.

It also provides a list of your 100 most-listened-to songs and songs that are similar to your list that you might have missed out on. It also compiles all that information into a handy chart that you can share with your friends that are interested in your listening habits. This marketing tactic worked extremely well, drawing attention to the amount of care Spotify shows in taking care of its fans.

Another significant addition to the many features Spotify added is their end-of-the-year streaming data. There are a lot of interesting tidbits that show the impact of streaming on users’ listening habits. Spotify’s most streamed artists were Ed Sheeran, Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and The Chainsmokers. Sheeran holds the special distinction of being the only artist on the list that originates outside of North America, showing that location does not necessarily matter anymore in the internet age. Hip-hop listening increased by an incredible 74% and the streaming of the Latin genre increased by a similarly awe-inducing 110%. Heading into 2018, we shall see what Spotify has in store for us and what genres will be on the rise.
