Oprah 2020
Will Oprah run in the 2020 election?
“In 2011, I told some jokes about our current president at the White House Correspondents Dinner, jokes about how he was unqualified to be president, and some have said that night convinced him to run. And if that’s true, I would just like to say Oprah, you will never be President,” Seth Meyers said as he opened the night of the Golden Globe awards on Sunday, January 8th. Oprah Winfrey burst into laughter, but an hour later, Winfrey was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is given to a talented individual who has made an incredible impact on the world of entertainment. She gave an incredibly inspiring speech that was a personal and universal call to action. She closed her speech with, “I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon.” A thunderous applause broke out as everyone at the Beverly Hilton stood one their feet. Meanwhile, on social media, the prospects of Oprah running in 2020 came to light.
People have taken it to Twitter to express their opinions on the idea of Oprah running for president. All the chatter has democratic circles buzzing. Brad Anderson, the Iowa state director for Obama’s re-election, tweeted, “Call me Oprah. I’ve got some Iowa county chairs who would love to hear from you.” Even President Trump weighed in when a reporter asked him about whether he would beat Oprah. “Yeah, I’d beat Oprah,” before quickly changing gears. “Oprah would be a lot of fun. I know her very well… I like Oprah. I don’t think she’s gonna run,” Trump says. Honestly, all the tweets and calls could’ve been a joke, but it’s no longer far-fetched for someone who primarily works in television to run for a high position in office. Though Oprah is very favorable with the public with a 52% approval rating and a mere 23% unfavorability rating, it doesn’t mean that everyone wants to throw her into the presidential race, with only 1 out of 5 people supporting that decision.
The former talk show host is no stranger to the political arena, often addressing political issues on her show. She was an early supporter for then-senator Barack Obama, giving him a boost in the primary fight against Hillary Clinton. In the 2016 election, she was an avid supporter of Hillary Clinton. Even so, she has publicly announced that she has no interest in running for president as she believes someone more experienced should be running. Winfrey comments on the rumors on “CBS This Morning”: “There will be no running for office of any kind for me.”
