Apparently, The Old Taylor can come to the phone right now. Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie’s “ME!” reminds fans of the bubbly pop that was once Taylor’s calling card.

Swift’s most recent album, Reputation, was indisputably out of her typical style. Albeit well received by fans, the album strayed even farther from Swift’s old familiar than 2014’s 1989. A loyal fan of her myself, my hill to die on is the aforementioned album; a seamless entry onto the pop scene, most if not all of the singles off of that album are still household melodies. My preference clear, I was pleased to see her new cotton-candy colored theme on social media teasing her freshly released single “ME!”. Her new look resonates closely from her old, 2014-era one; hardly to my dismay.

I went into the song relatively blind to what the single itself was, but was no less than impressed by the catchy melodies and self-loving lyrics. One of the most pleasant surprises of the entire song was Panic! At the Disco’s Brendon Urie’s verses, making this single an unlikely but impressive pairing. Her humorous, nearly cynical lines draw resemblance to classics “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “Blank Space”, off of Red and 1984 respectively. In light of her current (or previous) era or reimagining herself, this quirky concept came to me as a surprise. A welcome one, no doubt, but again making it harder for the public to place a label on this pop titan. Perhaps that’s her ultimate goal; the song “ME!” standing as a manifestation of her uniqueness when she “promise[s] you’ll never find another like [her]”, and how she aims to remain unpredictable in her endeavors. Coming off of her astounding Reputation Stadium Tour, it’s no secret that Swift has a flair for the dramatic.

In any case, fans have what appears to be a resurgence and reimagination of the presumedly dead ‘old Taylor’ on the horizon.
