Abortion Rights Walkout
On Monday, May 9th 2022, a large number of Oakton Students walked out of 5th period return to protest the restrictions on women’s reproductive rights. This walkout was incited by the recent draft opinion by the Supreme court which seems to overturn precedential supreme court cases like Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey which solidified abortion rights across the united states. This recent draft opinion, obtained by political, seems to suggest that these rights would be put into the states hands which many would use to restrict or even outright ban abortion.
This walkout intended to display many Oakton’s students’ discomfort with this as well as allow Oakton students to be worried about many . The event organizer, Ananya Murthy, for example, talked about feeling “really helpless and scared, and I didn’t know what I could do… so I decided to do this.” Other students, like Zahraa Hussain, talked about her strong feelings of “support for roe v wade” and how she believed that “young people should be involved in the cause.”
