iOS 10 Update

Clashing reactions to the new iPhone update for fall of 2016

Apple officially released the iOS 10 update on Sept. 13, and the reactions seem to be hot and cold. Some love it, and some hate it with a burning passion.

Haters brought their outrage to Twitter, criticizing everything from the new layout to the Emojis. When comparing the new Apple Emojis to the Samsung ones, people have noticed that they are extremely similar. It’s a shame considering the Apple Emojis had a clean, unique look that separated from all other phones.

Not only did they change the style, they got rid of an Emoji that was very popular. Apple chose to switch the gun Emoji with a water gun which caused many different responses. “The Daily News” called it ironic since the same company that refused to help the government hack terrorist groups to see where they get weapons is making a political statement with the water gun. On the other hand, a columnist from “The Guardian” praised Apple for the bold move, supporting the decision. “I think that Apple is trying too hard to come up with something new, and they failed miserably and made everything a lot harder,” said Oakton junior Kaitlin Franco. Katie Holec, a junior, on the other hand likes the new update saying, “It’s more colorful, [there are] more things you can do, and I like sending the gifs.” Apple stated that this sudden change in the gun Emoji was due to the shootings happening across the country. Apparently, Apple and Microsoft have made a mutual agreement to drop the gun Emoji from all different platforms.

In contrast, many argued there should have been more Emojis added. For example, there currently isn’t an Emoji for women wearing scarves or b
urqas, although they did add women doing various types of jobs, and even one wearing a turban. They also added the rainbow flag representing the LGBT community. Apple is slowly getting there with its list of Emojis, diversifying it more and more with each update.

There are also an addition of new gifs, which are short animated images. Many people seem to like them and think they’re a exciting new way to text. They have created many different kinds for different occasions and they’re fun to use. There also is a night mode now which you can switch to so your eyes are less strained from using your phone for a long period of time. There haven’t been any glitches or faults with the new gifs and night mode, so many people enjoy using them.img_1707

Whether or not the update is worth it is another question. A randomized poll here at Oakton showed that out of 38 students, 24% have the update and like it, 24% have updated but dislike it, 20% haven’t updated but plan on doing so, and 32% refuse to update.

Overall, it seems to be 50/50, with only a few more people disliking the update. It seems that the change in the style of the Emojis is the only thing kind of throwing people off. Other than that, every other addition to the update seems to be working fine and makes using your phone easier and convenient.
