Fields of Fear: A Trick or Treat?
Experience the new and improved fright night
A tradition for many years now, Cox Farms’ Fields of Fear has been the trendy place for teenagers to visit for a night of thrill during the fall season. Located on an eerie, isolated farmland off Braddock Road, Fields of Fear features four attractions: The Firegrounds, Dark Side Hayride, The Forest, and the notorious Cornightmare. Visitors have the opportunity to experience all four attractions at the price of $25-$30, depending on the day of the week.
Having visited Fields of Fear last year with two other friends, it is quite the experience. The sky becomes pitch dark, the air carries the scent of burning wood from the nearby fire, and most haunting of all, shrill screams echo throughout the night, vibrating off of every crevice of the field. Visitors walk through a dark, mysterious maze and/or forest with lurking characters behind every turn, ready to dive out at anytime, eliciting shrieks from many. Some may even go as far as to snatch at hair or give a push. Whatever is in store, have an escape plan or brave it out.
However, it is rumored that Fields of Fear is changing the game this fall. Instead of the normal zombie hayride and mundane monsters from previous years, designers are looking to intensify the experience by adding a few alterations. With the 2016 clown sightings, attacks, and the recent release of the movie “It,” it seems most practical that designers of Fields of Fear have filled the attractions with bloodcurdling clowns. What many know as the zombie hayride from previous years will now have to experience “The Lost Circus,” as well as a new clown house in the Cornightmare. Once visitors are lucky enough to have survived all four hurdles, a seemingly innocent toddler runs up and pulls out a chainsaw, waving it around at terrified victims.
Having been open to the public for almost a month, some Oakton students have already experienced the new change for themselves. According to sophomores Sara Azmi and Mounia Hammadi, the new attractions were delightfully horrifying.
