Oakton Varsity Basketball Season Recap
The season for the Cougars Varsity Basketball team ended with a defeat to Battlefield this Wednesday, Feb. 7. The loss ended their hopes to win a state ring, but overall the season was an incredibly successful one. The team was able to win districts after defeating both Chantilly and Westfield in tightly contested games. In fact, the win against Chantilly came off of a buzzer beater three by sophomore Micah Johnson and the win against Westfield was clinched by great free throw shooting by senior Braeden Johnson.
In addition to winning districts this year, many members of the team were recognized for their stellar play throughout the entire campaign. Mr. Brooks, the head coach, was awarded coach of the year for the entire district. Two of the team leaders, Braedan Johnson and Jake Digby were both honored by being first team all district. Also, Micah Johnson was awarded second team all district. Finally, both Jonah Shultz and Charlie Smith were recognized for their great defensive play.
Even though the team is losing some great players to graduation, they hope to have another successful season next year. They will be led by current sophomore Garrett Johnson and current junior Micah Johnson. Also, they have numerous players on the JV team that should be able to step up and help the team out in a variety of ways. Jake Digby (12), says that he greatly enjoyed playing during the last four years and that he hopes the team does well next year even without him.
