Captain Marvel Movie Controversy

Trouble is brewing for Marvel studios

The opening of Captain Marvel on March 8th is a much anticipated event. It is an incredibly momentous occasion with it being a large part of the conclusion to the marvel cinematic universe in the upcoming film, Avengers: Endgame. Unfortunately the launch of the movie has not come without some backlash. Brie Larson, the star of the new film is an outspoken feminist, both to her benefit, and detriment. Her new powerful character attracts millions of young girls to be their best selves, but she also has been known to be a “Man Hater” as during one of her interviews about the new movie, she said that she is sick of being interviewed but white men. Her new role as well as past roles have been clearly biased towards the treatment of men and whether or not she is a good example for young girls is very questionable.

In this day and age, there is a lot of emphasis on the treatment of women in society. The main focus is generally on representation in pop culture despite the growth of some movements such as the Me Too movement. People often point to the hype for Captain Marvel stemming from the use of a female lead, but in truth movies have had female leads for decades now, and a very recent example of this is Gal Gadot’s lead in the movie Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot portrayed a wholesome yet strong female character which is a great influence on young girls. Compared to Gal Gadot, Brie Larson is negative, spiteful, and a bad example of what the future of America should look like for women around the country.

With the poor stigma given to the new movie, people all over are starting to boycott the movie because of the controversy around Brie Larson. I would be too much to say that she doomed the movie by inserting her political views, but she has angered a lot of people. Despite the whole controversy, the movie will still get great reviews in the box office and will be a centerpiece of the marvel cinematic universe.
