At approximately 2 PM on Saturday, Apr. 11, an unnamed gunman committed suicide by gunshot on the western steps of the US Capitol Building. At the moment, officials do not know the reason for the act, although there is no indication of terrorism. In addition to the shooting, a “suspicious package” was found in relative proximity to the body, although it was quickly cleared of any potential threat. Nevertheless, a lockdown was promptly established at the site, prohibiting anyone unauthorized leave or entrance. The lockdown lasted for less than two hours; it was lifted at 3:45 PM. Congress has been on their two week break period and were set to return to work on the coming Monday, Apr. 13. As of now, there is no change in plans, Congress should reconvene on Monday.
Unfortunately, both the shooting and the lockdown put a damper on DC’s annual Cherry Blossom festival. Typically, tourists are drawn from all over by the sight of cherry blossom trees in beautiful bloom and the relief of personal stress. The festival was not shut down despite the suicide, although people will surely remember this year’s festival and the accompanying blemish.
