Despite the change in plans due to the storms and a possible hurricane during the week of Sept. 28, Oakton’s spirit week was exciting and successful. One of the reasons it was successful was the great participation from all grades and the school staff throughout the week.
Spirit Week got off to a fun start on Monday, with an awesome slumber party in pajamas. Pajama Day is definitely an all-time favorite of Oakton’s students and teachers. A poll was taken asking 100 students which spirit day was their favorite from this past week. Pajama Day won, as 64 out of 100 students voted it their favorite day. Students love this day because they get to be lazy and roll out of bed in their t-shirts and sweatpants. Some students even wore their “onesies” to school.
Mrs. Frew, an Algebra 2 and Calculus teacher at Oakton, is a very enthusiastic participant in Spirit Week. She participated actively in every day of Spirit Week, each with her own twist on the day. “Spirit days are the icing on the cake to a great week, ” said Mrs. Frew. She always looks forward to this special week, and particularly Pajama Day.
On Tuesday, Oakton students dressed up as T-Birds and Pink ladies from the movie “Grease,” which made for lots of interesting hallway conversations and laughter. Students and teachers wore leather jackets with jeans or long, pink poodle skirts. This day came in second place as students’ favorite spirit day.
Rydell Wednesday was the third spirit day in the week. Students and teachers sported their Oakton colors by proudly wearing burgundy and gold. There was a great participation rate because most Oakton students and staff had some school attire.
Thursday, the finale to Spirit Week (with the Homecoming football game moved up to Thursday night due to the storms), featured some great 50’s throwbacks. Students and staff were again seen dressed up in long skirts and jeans.
The first Spirit Week in the 2015-2016 school year was both exciting and enjoyable, and the students and staff had a great time either dressing up or seeing all the fantastic outfits throughout the week. Participation in Spirit Week is definitely encouraged – it is a great way to connect with peers and bring the high school together as a community. Despite the weather challenges, Oakton still demonstrated great enthusiasm. Wet weather definitely did not dampen Oakton’s spirits during Spirit Week.
