How to be Last-Minute Halloween Ghouls
Six quick and easy Halloween costumes to make if you’re running out of time
Most children start planning for Halloween months in advance. Whether driven by the tricks or the treats, they carefully plan each detail of their costume for next Halloween the second one Halloween ends! As they grow up, however, the costume decision tends to get pushed back further and further each year. What you once planned six months in advance you are suddenly planning two weeks, two days, two hours, even two minutes ahead of time. Whether you made a last minute decision to trick-or-treat or put off picking the perfect costume for that Halloween party you’re going to, it can become stressful trying to put a costume together at the very last minute. Because while most adults are happy to give candy to enthusiastic teenagers who knock on their door on October 31st, they’d be less than thrilled to give away candy to someone who didn’t bother to find a costume. If that’s about to be you, have no fear! We’ve got you covered with six last-minute costume ideas if you’re in a time crunch.
If you have a few days, you can be a…
Gumball machine
There’s no sweeter costume than one literally covered in sugar! Take a white top and red bottoms (pants, a skirt, or a red dress work great!). Using your trusty hot glue gun, glue either different colored pompoms or actual gumballs (if you’re dedicated to an authentic look) onto your shirt. Make a square out of silver duct tape and write “25¢” on it before gluing it on the bottom of your shirt. It’s as easy as that to be the sweetest costume at the party!
Fidget Spinner
Dress up as one of the biggest fads of 2017! While this costume may take a little bit of crafting skills, it’s worth it for the payoff of looking like the real thing. Simply cut out the shape from a thick piece of cardboard big enough to cover most of your body. Draw out the design and fill it in using either paint, thick markers, or construction paper. On Halloween night, wear dark clothing and tape or tie it in front of you for a quick and cool costume.
If you have a few hours, you can be a…
Paper Doll
With such a crafty costume, you can trick people into thinking you have been planning for months instead of hours! All you have to do is cut a big piece of cardboard or foam core (like from an old tri-fold presentation) into a dress (or shirt, skirt, pants) shape large enough to cover you. Color it in like you would a gigantic paper doll, and fasten it onto your clothes with duct tape. The best part is that no matter how many other paper dolls you pass (okay, probably not many), you’ll still look unique.
Scarecrow
Throw on your favorite flannel, a pair of overalls, and stuff your sleeves with hay! If you have a straw hat, make sure to wear that, too. While you may have to take a quick trip to the store to find hay, this creative and seasonally-appropriate costume should come together quickly.
If you have a few minutes, you can be a…
Ghost
Though you may have to sacrifice a perfectly good set of sheets for this costume, there is nothing easier or more classic than becoming a ghost for Halloween. Simply cover yourself completely in a white bed sheet, cutting two circles for eye holes, and voila, costume complete! If you’re feeling a little more creative, you can cut out circles not only as eye holes but all around to become not just any ghost but a Charlie Brown ghost! Beware, though: if you go the Charlie Brown route, you might get a few rocks in your pillowcase instead of candy!
Black Cat
Another easy classic, except you won’t have to cut anything up for this one. Wear all black clothing, pin a “tail” on your back (like a black boa from Michaels, or black pipe cleaners strung together), and put cat ears on your head (you can DIY them by twisting pipe cleaners into the shape). In five minutes flat, you could be walking out the door festive enough for the spooky holiday.
Hopefully you found at least one of these ideas inspiring (and doable!) enough for Halloween night. Good luck putting it together, and don’t feel bad for making the last minute decision to join in the Halloween fun. There’s something magical about Halloween, the peculiar feeling in the windy night air that shouldn’t be missed out on, even if you have to find a costume at the very last minute!
