A Snowy Spring

What’s behind the mysterious weather?

It seems like everybody’s snow dances, inside-out pajamas, and spoon-under-the-pillow antics have finally paid off – a few months later than expected. The biggest snow of 2018 happened in the spring, just days before Spring Break. Since then, snowflake icons have been gracing our weather apps sporadically, and a few flakes were spotted in real life this past Monday. While the chances of another snow day are still slim, the cold burst of weather begs the questions: What is behind all of it, and what’s coming next?

As for what is behind it all, global warming is one of the most prominent theories of why we’ve gotten some frigid temperatures thus far this spring. Though global warming typically refers to the slow increase in the earth’s temperature, it could potentially affect snow, too. According to ususa.org, global warming is making storms, both rain and snow, more intense. Unfortunately, this will likely cause an increase in flooding, but on the bright side, it could mean more blizzards in future winters.

This year? Don’t hold your breath for more snow days. The Farmer’s Almanac website predicts that April will have lower temperatures than usual, but average precipitation. May is also predicted to have lower temperatures than years past, with above average amounts of precipitation. Though it may sound promising for snow, remember that average April and May temperatures are far different from the typical February day.

“I think it’s going to snow more this year, but I don’t think it’s going to be enough to stick, just because the weather has been so wacky,” said Tess Klinker (10).

Global Warming or not, with lower temperatures than usual, there is a better chance than years past. However, snow in April is still extremely rare. But with the strange weather we’ve been having this year, who knows? Only time can tell.
