STRAWBERRIES

The strawberry season typically lasts from May to early June, however, this year many farms opened up in April. Strawberries are a simple food to snack on and pair perfectly with chocolate or whipped cream. It is important to wash them correctly though, as they are a part of the “dirty dozen” list: a list that consists of the twelve most common fruits or vegetables that have pesticide residue. Soaking them in vinegar will strip the remaining pesticides from the skin.

BLACKBERRIES

These tart-y berries are plentiful from June to August. They contain powerful antioxidants and improve oral health. Depending on when they are picked, they can either be bitter or sweet. When collected earlier in the season, they are more sour, but when picked later they are extremely appetizing.

BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries are in prominence between the months of June and August. They flourish in Virginia’s warm summer climate. Similarly to blackberries, they hold a lot of health benefits. Blueberries have one of the highest amounts of antioxidants in them compared to other berries and they are known for balancing blood sugar. Additionally, they are the perfect addition muffins or parfaits.

RASPBERRIES

Another popular berry, raspberries, are harvested from June to October. They provide potassium and have high amounts of melatonin; the perfect fix for a messy sleep schedule. However, they are a part of the dirty dozen list like strawberries, so they also require special washing before eating.

PEACHES

The peach season lasts from July to August. Not only are they yummy, but peaches help treat inflammation and detoxify the body. The combination of their firmness and sweetness makes them so delicious.

WATERMELON

Finally, the infamous summer staple fruit, watermelon, is in season between July to August. They’re refreshing on a hot summer day and are the perfect base for a homemade popsicle. Watermelons have high amounts of water in them and promote a healthy kidney. It’s no wonder they are a loved fruit for days full of sunshine.
