Last week, Champions League matches shocked people around the globe. With eight teams remaining going into the quarter finals, only four teams would advance. Each matchup of two teams played a two-game series, one at each of the teams’ home stadiums and the scoreline being kept on aggregate between them. The four teams to advance were Real Madrid, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Bayern Munich.
Real Madrid knocked out Wolfsburg after being down 2-0 in the first game and were saved only by a hat trick by Cristiano Ronaldo in the second game. Ronaldo scored two goals in a span of 90 seconds in the first half of the second game at the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid’s home stadium. Ronaldo than went on to score a free kick late in the second half to send Los Blancos through to the semi final in dramatic fashion.
Manchester City took down French heavyweights, Paris Saint-Germain on a 3-2 aggregate score. The first game was played in Paris and was a 2-2 draw with Manchester City winning the second leg 1-0 in Manchester. Man City were dominant the whole second match and Kevin De Bruyne curled in a finish past PSG keeper Kevin Trapp to send Manchester City into jubilation. This is the first time that City has ever made it past the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League.
Atletico Madrid had arguably the biggest upset of this year’s competition, beating Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate. After losing the first match 2-1 to the Spanish giants, Atletico’s chances looked grim. Atletico came out firing on all cylinders in the second leg, winning the match 2-0 with two crucial goals from their lethal striker, Antoine Griezmann. Atletico Madrid played one of the best team games of their season, defending for all they could a pushing forward with a deadly counter attack.
Bayern Munich cruised through to the semifinal with ease, betting Portuguese side SL Benfica. Although they only won 3-2 on the aggregate scoreline, they showed a much more dominate performance. A solid 1-0 in the first leg sent the German high flyers on a level of confidence going into the 2nd match. Bayern only drew the second game 2-2 but jumped out to an early lead and clearly didn’t have a sense of urgency to score goals. They showed an all around performance over both legs and look to continue their run of dominance in the semi finals.
The semifinal games are set, Bayern Munich versus Atletico Madrid and Manchester City versus Real Madrid. Hopefully both matches can deliver the excitement of the quarter finals and the Champions League has without a doubt. not disappointed this year.
