College basketball is revered almost religiously for many students at Oakton High School. As March Madness approaches, students are bracing their brackets for the NCAA tournament, and seeding hasn’t even finished yet. Seeding Sunday took place this past weekend, on Sunday March 13. The NCAA committee selects the 32 best teams in their respective conferences to compete in the tournament, with Kansas leading the pack ranked #1 in the conference. Trailing behind is #2 Michigan State, #3 Villanova, and #4 good ‘ole University of Virginia.
March 17th marks the beginning of “The Big Dance,” bringing with it homemade brackets and distracted students. People are able to download the NCAA sports app and stream the tournament directly to their smart devices, so most students at Oakton will have access to the tournament, even during school hours. It’s not only students who participate in the joy of “bracketology,” but teachers as well, making college basketball a huge deal for the Cougar community.
This year will be especially exciting for the people of Oakton due to the fact that one of the most popular colleges at the school (UVA of course) is ranked #4 in the nation. The University of Virginia is also ranked #3 in the ACC with an overall record of 24-6, with a conference record of 13-5 is looking to be a front-runner in the tournament and a major threat to to the top teams. Overall this March Madness is shaping up to be great one, not only for the students of Oakton, but for the nation as well.
